12:46 pm - 228
|
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/228_Incident
I got sent home from work today because the pregnant women were afraid I had chickenpox, and well, I didn't have a note from a doctor saying I didn't have it...
It's hard to imagine that just a year ago I was in Taiwan... Do me a favor and if you don't know about the 228 incident, check out the link above and read just a bit about it.

Hey everyone, haven't posted for a while, posting now on request from a friend in Taiwan ;) Anwyays, I've just recently come back from a trip to the east coast and I have another business trip planned to Germany (specifically Hannover) From March 7-20, should be fun, I'll come back with lots of pictures I promise. Alright it's 1 AM and I've been up every morning this week at 6:30AM to go jogging, not going to break the streak so I'm off to bed.
Just to see who reads my journal anymore... (stolen from Jill)
You can ask me ANY THREE questions, no matter how personal, inappropriate or random. I promise to answer the questions 100% truthfully. Repost this and see what people want to ask you!!!

7:19 pm - I'm going crazy
|
|
So yeah. I had planned to go to see iRobot w/ my friends, and the head of the marketing department, very nice (to me, now) lady, has been wanting me to take Alex's spot... I'm very not sure if I want to do it... but if I ever want an MBA, this IS the GOLDEN opportunity. A couple years @ that position, if I do well and survive, it'll be good. Of course I won't be thrown to the wolves first. Either way, I was planned to finally get away from programming. I don't know what's going on, I don't know that the hell I'll be doing next week. Crazy... so yeah, about my evening plans. It wouldn't be called Peer pressure, more like pressure from the head of the marketing dept, to go to Alex's farewell dinner (went to a farewell dinner last night for him at Dave & Busters with all the "youngsters" me being the youngest, the oldest probably 25 or 26) but now, it's with his department, which I'm being sucked into. I don't want to say no to moving there, but then again, I don't want to be eaten alive. I'm going crazy.

1:00 pm - I've been given a choice
|
So here I am, almost 1 month into my job. I've done some Software and Firmware, and some Testing. I've now been given an option... which I should probably decide on before monday when 2 new guys come in. Do I want to go into more Hardware intensive or more Software intensive. I think I know where I want to go, but I'm just uncertain, because this will dictate how my career at Wintec goes. I'd get to work more with my Hands, interface with vendors, and the department is very firmly established if I go hardware. Software/Firmware, would be mostly coding, not much outside interaction and the department isn't even formed yet.
My head hurts.

12:53 pm - DRAM
|
|
For the past week I've been testing memory modules (the "bread and butter" of Wintec), the highly technical process involves plugging in the module, hitting a button, then waiting to see if it passes or fails... if it fails, pull the module out and try again, if it continues to fail at the same point, it might be bad. Once tested, all of the 1 GB modules and above must be booted... that's right, plugged into the motherboard, booted up, go into system and make sure the number's correct, open a shitload of windows, then shutdown. There you have it folks, an insiders view into how memory is tested. However, they have been good about giving me a wide variety of modules to test, and I've had time to study up on some things. This is only temp (you wouldn't pay someone salary to do production work), I just hope I'm picking up enough for when the real work actually starts.

5:11 pm - Home at last
|
It's been quite a while since I've last updated. After 5 years of being ont he move, Philly, Home, Philly, Home, Philly, Home, Philly, Home, Taiwan, I'm finally back... most likely for good... until grad school =P.
Got my first paycheck today... wow... more than I expected. Well, I guess when you're making 1000 US a month for almost a year, a low paying US engineering job seems like a lot. Anyways, taking a short break at work, working fairly hard, I think, I hope they think so at least. Helped to wrap up a project, diving into two more at the moment, so it's back to work for me.

3:11 pm - I guess it's about time I updated
|
1) Going to Bali June 19-24, excited as hell, staying at the Hard Rock hotel. Will come back sunburnt.
2) Got a Job! 2a) Leaving Taiwan June 29th to start at Wintec Industries
3) Got a Job! (see 2a)
I am going to miss everyone in Taiwan. Wish I was here longer, but the job calls, and if I pass this very nice opportunity up, I think I'd be making a big mistake.

So definitely fucked up my shoulder. Playing badminton for a few hours for three days straight probably helped. We lost all 4 of our matches, I didn't help matters much, my partner and I went 0-4, doh! Anyways, exhausted and my right shoulder has a very limited range of motion.

3:36 pm - Suck
|
So yea, the first essay on my GRE exam started off alright, I made some good points, then I just let myself run away with it and it seemed like a confusing mess. I think my conclusion helped wrap it up but oh well. I think I did well on the Argument essay, so hopefully things will balance out alright.
Apparently some drama at the band semi-formal. Not sure exactly what went down, but didn't sound good. Last year, I spent most of the evening hitting on Angela, who looked amazing. I can't believe it's already been an entire year. I can't believe some of the tremendous ups and downs that I've gone through. I don't think I would have done much differently, just wish I could've seen the end comming. I haven't really talked to her in probably over a good month or so. I hear bits and rumors of what she's up to, but really nothing much. It's weird to think that we talked almost every day, and then suddenly, we didn't. Am I unhappy about somethings, yes, will I get over it, maybe.
Anyways, badminton is on schedule for the next two evenings. My fat ass is slowly, very slowly getting into shape. My appetite still hasn't returned since the bout with that intestinal virus. A McDonald's Combo meal is almost too much for me to finish =P I haven't seriously gone out drinking for at least a couple months, haven't really had the desire to either, so that helps with the calorie intake. No worries though, I'm still a fatass. All the water weight I lost during the virual battle has been regained. I think after this week, I'm going to throw in a trip or two to the treadmill along w/ the badminton. I'd like to get in shape before my trip to Bali.

Going to Bali, Indonesia for 5 days 4 nights w/ Joness, Wu Tsen Long and one of Joness' friends! WooHoo all for the low low price of 17000 NT, that's about 500 US for airfare and a 5-star hotel on the beach! If anyone wants to come, I still have room in my suitcase for 2 more people. Hurry, space is filling fast as I begin to fold my laundry, reserve your space now!

11:32 am - Shrimp!
|
I get back from Taipei and my GRE classes on Sunday, and Joness comes to pick me up from the bus stop after his class. As we're walking to his car, he's on the phone and walking quite fast, finally he gets off the phone and asks, "do you want to go catch some shrimp? " Mind you this isn't the deep sea Forrest Gump type shrimping, this is something the children in Taiwan do for fun, kinda like catching frogs in the US, except both boys and girls and recent college graduates who've never seen it done before attempt to do it. A few other coworkers and their families are there, wading in a stream and turning over rocks, trying to coerce the small shrimp into a net (the shrimp are small, the smallest about an inch in length, the largest about three). I spent an hour wading in the stream and caught about a dozen, mostly tiny shrimp. It was fun and as it turns out, catch and release =P Except for the few that got taken home as pets.
Written part of the GRE next Monday... going into hiding.
